MIDDENDORP: WE HAVE TO TAKE THE POINT
25 April 2021
Maritzburg United head coach Ernst Middendorp was a little frustrated that his side had to settle for a 1-1 DStv Premiership draw with Baroka FC at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday evening.
Maritzburg had started the game brightly and took the lead through a lovely bit of combination play which ended with Thabiso Kutumela expertly finding the top corner of the net in the 25th minute.
But it ended up being a bit of a disappointing evening as Baroka equalised soon after and then made it very difficult for the Team of Choice.
“We have to take it. In the end, hopefully a point will help us,” coach Ernst said.
“In the situation where we scored the goal, I thought that was a fantastic combination, what we were working on in preparing for this game. Rather than crossing and playing into their hands.
“But we didn’t see it enough second half, with players (not) being available between the lines in the opponents’ defence, midfield line, attacking line. [We needed] to be patient, to pull them out, to create the space that we can score.”
Pointing to Baroka’s defensive tactics, Middendorp says this made it even harder to break down the opposition. He feels that given a bit more time, Maritzburg will become more successful at unlocking stubborn defences.
“This is the most difficult way [to attack] - you have to creative, you have to be patient, you have to be available in your ball receiving possession.
“But that is not our strong point at the moment. We are living from transitions, from hard-working, but it’s understandable at the moment, we have to understand that we are building something, six or seven players are new in the team.”
