MARITZBURG COME AWAY EMPTY HANDED FROM MAMELODI SUNDOWNS ENCOUNTER
5 May 2021
Maritzburg United were on the receiving end of a 2-0 DStv Premiership defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday.
The Team of Choice had their chances but it was the log leaders who were clinical on the day.
There was plenty of early action as Mosa Lebusa had a goal ruled out for offsides while Dusan Stevic's low drive was saved by Denis Onyango and then Peter Shalulile hit the woodwork.
Maritzburg enjoyed some good opportunities through Bongokuhle Hlongwane, who went close with a chip before also just missing out with a header from a Thabiso Kutumela cross.
It was Downs though who were to score first courtesy of a Ricardo Nascimento penalty six minutes before the interval in Pretoria.
At the other end, Hlongwane was unfortunate to see a curling effort flash inches side.
After the break, Nascimento went close with one header and was then denied by Marcel Engelhardt, who also saved a Shalulile header.
The Brazilians sealed the win in the 71st minute when Gift Motupa found the net after a set-up from Mothobi Mvala.
