KUTUMELA DEPARTS TEAM OF CHOICE FOR MAMELODI SUNDOWNS
16 July 2021
Maritzburg United would like to wish striker Thabiso Kutumela all the best in the new chapter of his career after he signed for DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns
Kutumela has penned a five-year contract with Sundowns.
The 28-year-old had been with Maritzburg United since midway through the 2018/ 19 season, having arrived from Orlando Pirates.
He had struggled to make his mark at Pirates, but enjoyed a new lease of life in Pietermaritzburg.
Not only did Kutu go on to score numerous crucial goals for United, he also forced his way into the Bafana Bafana squad, and captained the club last season.
A popular member of the dressing room, he scored 12 league goals and two cup goals in the 2020/ 21 campaign.
The Mokopane-born player will be missed at the Harry Gwala Stadium, but such is the nature of football.
“It is with mixed feelings that we say goodbye to Thabiso,” said Maritzburg United chairman Farook Kadodia.
“Of course his leaving will leave a void which must be filled. But we could not deny the player the chance to try and take his career to the next level in Gauteng, to play for what is currently South Africa’s most successful club, and to participate in the Champions League.
“It is of great credit to both Kutumela and the Team of Choice coaching staff that he has flourished with us during his time in KwaZulu-Natal. We wish him all the very best in his future endeavours and thank him for his professionalism and for the important goals he scored for Maritzburg United.”
In total, Kutumela netted 28 goals and registered five assists in 74 matches for Maritzburg.
