THERON AND ZUMAH: LATEST MARITZBURG UNITED SIGNINGS CONFIRMED
28 July 2021
Maritzburg United have further added to our playing squad with the acquisition of two new players, Brandon Theron and Richard Zumah.
Theron is an experienced PSL campaigner who operates on the right flank and is effective both in defensive and attacking modes.
Zumah, who hails from Ghana, is a young striker who most recently played in the Ivory Coast.
The Cape Town-born Theron first made his name in the NFD for Milano United, before moving onto Highlands Park, Cape Umoya and most recently Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (now called Marumo Gallants FC).
At 28-years-old, he's very much in his prime. "With Brandon Theron it's well known that he is a player with good skills, the ability to contribute to a good team performance, I think that's very crucial," commented Team of Choice head coach Ernst Middendorp.
"Being able to provide flexibility in terms of the use - whether as a wing-back a full-back, or if you want to use him as a more attacking option. He's an interesting player and we are very happy to have him here."
Zumah meanwhile is 24-years-old and a tall muscular marksman at well over 1.80m high. Apart from the Ivory Coast, his football career also previously took him to Iraq.
"Richard Zumah is quite unknown here, coming (originally) from Ghana," said Middendorp. "He played lately for San Pedro in the Ivory Coast, we followed him and we believe a player with his structure, with his style will fit our idea of playing.
"He's just coming in, he needs some days, he's still young and a player with a certain ability to improve and to fit in, in a proper way.
"We really worked on it in the background, not in public, over weeks to bring them in and get them here and we are very happy to have them as part of our squad."
Maritzburg’s other new signings ahead of the 2021/ 22 season are Alfred Ndengane, Zukile Kewuti, Lifa Hlongwane and Rowan Human. On the technical bench, Maahier Davids has returned as an assistant to coach Ernst, while adding another dimension is Pedro Ramos, a performance/ video analyst from Portugal.
Team of Choice Chairman Farook Kadodia also spoke of the importance of getting the recruitment right and making sure that the players fit the club:
"We have been looking at players very closely, to ensure they suit the philosophy of the club and the coach's approach for the new season.
"We believe that the players we have signed will contribute to the kind of football Maritzburg want to play this season. We welcome them to the club and wish them all the best."
