NTSHANGASE HONOURED TO DON THE MARITZBURG UNITED ARMBAND
2 August 2021
Phumlani Ntshangase’s leadership skills and the natural respect he commands amongst his peers have made him the perfect candidate to wear the Maritzburg United captain’s armband this season.
Still relatively young at 26, ‘Phums’ does however have a load of experience under his belt – he made his PSL debut for Bidvest Wits back in the 2013/ 14 season, meaning that the upcoming 2021/ 22 DStv Premiership campaign will be his ninth in the top flight.
Cool, calm and collected in the centre of midfield, Ntshangase’s natural disposition is to lead by example with his whole-hearted approach to the game accompanied by his great communication skills.
Now going into his third season with Maritzburg United, the midfield general is well respected for his professional and committed approach. He plans to make the most of the opportunity.
"I'm thankful first of all for being granted the opportunity to be one of the leaders for the coming season,” Ntshangase told Maritzburg United’s media department after training on Monday evening.
"I'm excited, but also not really nervous. Because I know what it comes with to be the leader - it comes with hard work, focus, because you must lead by example, to all of the guys.
"And also learn from them, listen to them. Because by age there are others who are older than me. But there are also a lot of youngsters coming up into the first team. It's a big opportunity for me and I'll take it with both hands."
First up as the new club captain for Ntshangase is a KwaZulu-Natal derby: the Team of Choice play Golden Arrows in their first match of the 2021/ 22 DStv Premiership season - at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Saturday 21st of August 2021.
