MARITZBURG HEAD INTO THE SEASON UPBEAT AFTER PREMIERS CUP VICTORY
9 August 2021
The Maritzburg United contingent will head into the new PSL season with a spring in their steps after winning the KZN Premiers Cup for the first time.
The Team of Choice beat high-flying Durban side AmaZulu on Sunday at the Chatsworth Stadium. After a thrilling final had ended 2-2, United triumphed in the penalty shootout.
On target in regulation time were new-boys Richard Zumah and Zukile Kewuti, who both registered their first goals for the club. Providing the respective assists were Rowan Human and Brandon Theron, another two recent recruits.
Newly-appointed club captain Phumlani Ntshangase received the Man-of-the-Match award.
"Thanks to God, to my family and to our beautiful fans back in Maritzburg," the tenacious midfielder said after the victory over Usuthu.
"And thanks to all the guys and the coaching staff and the Chairman. It's not easy always playing against each other as [KZN] rivals. This is a good start for us as a team this season, we had a very hard season last season."
Earlier on Sunday, United had secured a resounding 5-1 victory over Royal AM in the semi-final, thanks to a brace from Razeen Bennett, as well as goals from Asanda Buthelezi, Judas Moseamedi and Ryan Rae. Another positive from that match was a hat-trick of assists for new signing Lifa Hlongwane.
In the quarter-finals, on Saturday, Maritzburg's first game of the tournament had also been won on penalties, following a 2-2 draw with Uthongathi. Bongokuhle Hlongwane was responsible for both our goals.
The tournament victory comes two weeks before we kick off the 2021/ 22 DStv Premiership season with a KwaZulu-Natal derby away at Golden Arrows on Saturday 21 August at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium.
