MARITZBURG SUFFER LATE HEARTBREAK IN ATTERIDGEVILLE

25 September 2021

Maritzburg United lost 2-1 to SuperSport United in a DStv Premiership game at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday evening.

Lifa Hlongwane’s second half goal had brought Maritzburg back into the match at 1-1, only for Thatayaone Ditlhokwe to net a winner for the Pretoria side in the final few seconds of added time.

Matsatsantsa had earlier on taken the lead just eight minutes in when Thamsanqa Gabuza rose strongly in the box to head in from a corner.

Maritzburg began to find their feet around the 15-minute mark and after a couple of half chances, a good opportunity was fashioned for Amadou Soukouna, who latched onto a Brandon Theron pass on the edge of the area but fired straight at goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

Soukouna, United's match winner against Marumo Gallants on Wednesday, also tested Williams with a well-struck 32nd minute free kick.

There was also a blocked shot for Richard Zumah before the interval as the KwaZulu-Natal side continued to sniff for a way back into the game.

After a decent start to the second half for Maritzburg, the game was put on hold for about 15 minutes due to floodlight failure.

Following the restart, the Team of Choice came out playing with purpose and they had their reward soon after as Lifa Hlongwane finished clinically. The goal had materialised from a strong run by Soukouna, who drew Tebogo Mokoena into making a challenge that resulted in the ball falling into Hlongwane's path.

Maritzburg kept pressing for another goal, although it was SuperSport who went close on the hour mark when Buhle Mkhanazi headed just wide.

In an exciting final 20 minutes of the game, both sides had chances to win the game; for Maritzburg, Soukouna nearly threaded in Theron, only to be denied by Ditlhokwe, before Alfred Ndengane headed over from the resultant corner in the 85th minute.

The Team of Choice looked to have done enough to secure a point for their efforts but were unfortunately forced to come home empty handed after Ditlhokwe powered in a 93rd minute header from a corner.
