MIDDENDORP: WE DESERVED MORE

27 September 2021

Maritzburg United coach Ernst Middendorp was left disappointed after the setback over the weekend.

The Team of Choice suffered late heartbreak when SuperSport United netted a stoppage-time winner to condemn them to a 2-1 DStv Premiership loss in Atteridgeville on Saturday evening.

It was a bitter ending for United, who began the game slowly and went down 1-0 after just eight minutes, before clawing their way back.

“I think the two set pieces where we conceded the goals, the first one we got what we deserved and rightfully went 1-0 down,” coach Ernst said. “It came after a slow start and this is absolutely normal after having such little preparation time.

“The opponents were waiting for us after having seven days preparing to face you. It was tough for us because we don't have a squad that is in that place at the moment, we have several new players and played twice last week.”

United won both those previous games to get their campaign on the move – they were victorious against Baroka FC and Marumo Gallants.

They looked well on course to earn a point at the Lucas Moripe Stadium where a Lifa Hlongwane strike cancelled out Thamsanqa Gabuza’s opener.

But Thatayaone Ditlhokwe netted in the fourth minute of stoppage time to snatch all the points for the hosts.

“I think twenty minutes into the game we stared combining, started to play, we started to put the opposition under pressure,” coach Ernst added.

“The link-up play was better and we had opportunities to score. then in the second half from the start, the performance was better and we played at least on the same level as the opposition and then to concede late on another goal, it is difficult to process.”

The result left United in ninth place with six points from five matches. Their next match is away at Royal AM on Sunday.
