MARITZBURG AIM TO BOUNCE BACK IN FIRST ROYAL AM DERBY

1 October 2021

Maritzburg United play KwaZulu-Natal opponents Royal AM for the first time in the DStv Premiership this Sunday as they look to get back on the winning trail following a disappointing week.

The Team of Choice suffered a last-ditch defeat to SuperSport United in Tshwane on Saturday, a result that came after they had won their previous two matches.

The loss was difficult to take, but it was certainly not the end of the world for assistant coach Maahier Davids.

“The manner that we lost was disappointing,” he reflected. “But we showed good character and spirit throughout the game, the lights switching off then switching on then off again.

“In the end we threw it away but we can take a lot of good things out of the performance.

“Yes we lost last minute but it doesn’t mean we’re not going into the game confidently. We’re still in a good place, we’re getting better with each performance, getting one or two guys back, so we will see.”

Maritzburg will be coming up for their second derby of the campaign having already played Lamontville Golden Arrows so far and lost 2-1 in the season-opener.

This is also the first time they will be playing Royal AM, who are one of the new teams in the 2021/22 championship.

The Chatsworth-based side have won their last three games to sit fourth on the table ahead of hosting their Pietermaritzburg-based visitors.

“They’ve scored eight games in two games and won three in a row, so they are the team to beat at the moment.,” coach Maahier said. “It’s really up to us now. We know our quality and we have to really trust ourselves, trust our ability and really live our principles that we put into practice every day.

“We have to believe in our processes and continue building, the results will then hopefully come as well.”

As for the derby element to the game, the coach added: “I think it gives us extra motivation and energy.

“We know its going to be tough, so we have to prepare ourselves more psychologically we are switch on come game time. We’re looking forward to it."
