MARITZBURG LOSE IT AT THE DEATH

3 October 2021

Maritzburg United suffered a cruel late blow when Royal AM scored with the last play of the game to secure a 2-1 DStv Premiership win at the Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The opening goal of a tight game was scored by Victor Letsoalo in the 71st minute, with Maritzburg hitting back though Zukhile Kewuti, only for Letsoalo to complete his brace in the 94th minute.

In a tight first half, neither side had much more than half chances and both goalkeepers remained largely untested.

There were a couple of openings though, including in the third minute when Bongokuhle Hlongwane beat his man before finding Brandon Theron in the middle, but his first time curling effort failed to hit the mark.

Shortly before the break, Kewuti bravely blocked a header from Royal AM captain Lesego Manganyi before Daylon Claasen fired a free kick straight at Royals keeper Hugo Nyame.

Maritzburg looked bright after the restart and there were chances on goal as Amadou Soukouna dragged a shot wide after a good run from Hlongwane before Daylon Claasen sent a header over the bar and also had a shot blocked.

Instead though the home side took the lead with 20 minutes to play when Letsoalo stole in to head home a cross by Tshisido Monamodi from the left flank.

The Team of Choice came back looking for an equaliser and there were a couple of chances for Soukouna, who went close with a free kick before being denied by sharp save by Nyame.

Ernst Middendorp's side were rewarded for their efforts in the 85th minute when Kewuti's cross-cum-shot from the left wing flew over the head of Nyame and into goal.

But, for the second time in the last two matches, there was to be late heartbreak for Maritzburg - Royal AM scored with the very last play of the game as Marcel Engelhardt saved Tshepo Rhikotso 's free kick onto the post with the rebound falling kindly for Letsoalo to tap in.
