TEAM OF CHOICE SHARE SPOILS WITH CHILLI BOYS

7 November 2021

A hard-fought DStv Premiership encounter at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Sunday saw Maritzburg United playing to a 0-0 draw against Chippa United.

The point earned against Gavin Hunt's Chippa side keeps coach Ernst Middendorp's Maritzburg team in 11th spot on the table.

Overall it was a tough physical battle with not too much in the way of creative play in attack from either team.

Following kick off, Maritzburg found themselves on the backfoot and it took an excellent save by Marcel Engelhardt in the second minute to keep the hosts from scoring.

The German was at it again in the 20th minute when he raced off his line in a flash to deny Eva Nga.

The Team of Choice then had an opportunity of their own, in the 22nd minute, as Travis Graham won possession and turned and fired in a shot at goal which he dragged marginally wide.

Maritzburg's starting line-up was disrupted on the half hour mark when an injury to Ryan Rae saw him being replaced by Riyaaz Ismail.

The second change was not long in coming either as Daylon Claasen was replaced by Lifa Hlongwane at the start of the second half.

United showed renewed urgency in attack after the restart and Bongokuhle Hlongwane went close in the 58th minute when his volley flew just over goal, following Ismail's flick from Phumlani Ntshangase's long throw.

The Team of Choice continued to push and probe for openings but weren’t able to find much fluency to their attacks.

There was another chance when Ntshangase’s 83rd minute long throw was cleared to Ismail who struck a half-volley straight at the Chilli Boys keeper.

Maritzburg now shift their focus to the home match against Kaizer Chiefs on November 21.
