MARITZBURG SUFFER AMAKHOSI DEFEAT
21 November 2021

Maritzburg United lost 1-0 to Kaizer Chiefs in a tightly-contested DStv Premiership encounter at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Sunday evening.

In an evenly balanced game, both sides created numerous chances, but it was the Soweto outfit who made it count when captain Bernard Parker scored just after the hour mark in KwaZulu-Natal.

The first half was a high energy, intense affair as the two sides slugged it out.

The early chances fell the way of Chiefs as Njabulo Ngcobo headed a second minute cross over the crossbar from just a couple of meters out before Erick Mathoho was off target with a ninth minute volley.

Maritzburg were also looking a threat on the attack and they too had chances, but failed to make them count as Bongokuhle Hlongwane squandered a headed opportunity in the 11th minute before Keagan Ritchie and then Hlongwane fired shots straight at Amakhosi keeper Daniel Akpeyi.

The action continued at both ends as Phumlani Ntshangase cleared a Mathoho header off the goal line, and Richard Zumah fired a tame shot at Akpeyi before Hlongwane sent a curling effort from the edge of the box marginally side.

Chiefs had the first chances after the restart as Ncgobo fired wide from 20-yards and Khama Billiat missed with a 30-yard free kick.

Amakhosi were to take the lead in the 63rd minute when a short corner routine ended with Bernard Parker heading in from Billiat's cross.

Looking for a way back into the game, Maritzburg upped their efforts. Substitute Rowen Human was at the forefront and he had three chances in quick succession around the 75 minute mark, but he went wide with one shot and was also twice kept out by Akpeyi.

The Team of Choice continued to probe for an equaliser, but were unable to create any more openings.
