MARITZBURG BATTLE HARD FOR KZN DERBY POINT
28 November 2021

Maritzburg United showed great character to salvage a 1-1 draw from Sunday evening’s DStv Premiership derby against AmaZulu at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

After conceding early in the KwaZulu-Natal derby, Amadou Soukouna grabbed a stunning 86th minute equaliser.

Following a lively start to the game from both teams, AmaZulu took the lead on the 10 minute mark when Luvuyo Memela sneaked in at the near post to steer a cross from Andre de Jong past Marcel Engelhardt.

United had a chance four minutes later to try and restore parity, but it wasn’t to be as Travis Graham's curling shot from 25-yards flew over the bar.

That aside, there was a free kick from Soukouna in the 25th minute which flew wide, while Bongokuhle Hlongwane was unable to direct a header on goal following a cross from Brandon Theron 10 minutes later.

At the other end, AmaZulu continued to look dangerous on attack, but Maritzburg did well to protect their goal and ensure Engelhardt didn't have too much more to do for the remainder of the first half.

The Team of Choice started the second half with purpose and there was a chance as Soukouna had a shot deflected for a corner.

As the half wore on, Maritzburg maintained the pressure while AmaZulu looked to hit on the counter.

United's efforts were rewarded in the dying minutes when Soukouna beat two defenders before unleashing a thunderbolt into the back of the net for the equaliser.
