MARITZBURG EYEING BIG DERBY VICTORY
7 January 2022
The Maritzburg United reserve team is highly motivated ahead of the blockbuster encounter where they will be squaring off against AmaZulu in the much-anticipated KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) derby in the DSTV Diski Challenge on Saturday at the Harry Gwala Stadium. The match will kick off at 10 am.
Head coach Peter Petersen has vowed to get better of Usuthu.
“A derby is a derby. You don’t have to ask the players anything because they know it’s all about bragging rights.” Petersen explained.
The Team of Choice is lying in position ten with 13 points after 11 games, while AmaZulu FC are occupying 11th place with 12 points in 11 matches.
“There’s no need to motivate them because this game is a motivation itself to the players,” he added.
Petersen and his troops finished 2021 with a 2-0 defeat at the expense of Cape Town City while Usuthu won their previous encounters by 1-0 against Stellenbosch FC.
“They will put on a good performance and give their best because they are going to be playing against their friends," Petersen elaborated.
The Team of Choice is determined to start the new year with a bang but the Team of Choice mentor wants his team to avoid unnecessary mistakes.
“If you look at the way we play, it’s always small errors that cost us," Petersen stated.
Despite creating numerous clear goal-scoring opportunities and dominating the bulk of our matches, the lads have lacked the killer instinct in the final third but Petersen has worked diligently behind the scenes to fix that problem.
“The biggest thing is getting the ball at the back of the net. We have been creating chances but not scoring. But hopefully, we’ll turn the corner, come Saturday. It’s not going to be easy because AmaZulu are not an easy side, but we’ll see.” Petersen concluded.
