TEAM OF CHOICE SEE OFF MATSATSANTSA
15 February, 2022

Maritzburg United secured a 2-1 DStv Premiership win over SuperSport United at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Tuesday evening.

It was just a fourth win in 35 matches for Maritzburg against the Pretoria side and the victory also served as consolation after last weekend's Nedbank Cup defeat against the same opponents.

United had a good early chance in the ninth minute through Friday Samu, but the Zambian striker was unable to find the net.

Then after a tight first half, the Team of Choice took the lead in the third minute of added time when Samu received a cross from the right, brilliantly taking the ball on the turn before beating Ronwen Williams clinically at the near post.

Unfortunately though for the home side, Matsatsantsa were back on level terms 10 minutes after the restart, when from a free-kick from the right, Jesse Donn looped a header into the net.

To Maritzburg's credit, they kept probing for a goal and they had their reward in the 71st minute when Samu did superbly to beat a defender and get to the byline before pulling the ball back for Rowan Human, who finished with a composed low shot past Williams from 12-yards out.

Samu could have added more goals, but fired wide in the 73rd minute and also went inches wide with an 81st minute header Nicholus Lukhubeni's cross.

A third goal was however not needed as Maritzburg held firm in the closing minutes to secure a crucial three points.

STARTING XI: Engelhardt, Claasen, Daniels (©️), Ritchie, Ndengane, Fernandez Pereira, Lukhubeni, Graham, Human, Samu and Macheke.

SUBS: Leaner, Ismail, Kewuti, Palace, Baloyi, Njoti, Skelem, Soukouna and Rae.
