TEAM OF CHOICE BEATEN BY SEKHUKHUNE

25 August 2021

Maritzburg United suffered a 2-0 defeat to Sekhukhune United at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday evening.

It was a frustrating 90 minutes as Maritzburg failed to turn periods of supremacy into goals.

The hosts had made a promising start to the game, with Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Richard Zumah putting the Sekhukhune defence under pressure.

However, it was instead Sekhukhune who were to draw first blood when Chibuike Ohizu netted from a Vusimusi Mncube assist in the 18th minute.

Team of Choice keeper Marcel Engelhardt was also forced into making a diving save to his right to keep out a long range effort from Tlotlo Leepile soon after.

Engelhardt was however picking the ball out his own net again in the 28th minute after Ohizu struck with a header.

Maritzburg regrouped and ended the first half on the front foot. They couldn't make it count though as Rowan Human curled a shot which was just tipped over the bar by Tapuwa Kapini before Zukile Kewuti arrived at the back-post to reach Travis Graham's cross, but sent his flicked effort straight at the visiting goalkeeper.

The KwaZulu-Natal side continued after the break to try and find a way back into the game and after a long throw in from Daylon Claasen in the 58th minute the ball was flicked on at the near post by Alfred Ndengane before Hlongwane sent a header just wide.

Hlongwane's namesake, Lifa, also came close for Maritzburg with a 76th minute free kick which brought out a fingertip save from Kapini.

Bongokuhle Hlongwane had another attempt when he turned and fired goalwards, but it wasn't to be his or the Team of Choice's evening as it flew just wide of target.
