UNITED BEATEN BY CAPE TOWN CITY
6 April , 2022

It was a disappointing night for Maritzburg United as the Team of Choice went down 1-0 to Cape Town City in a DStv Premiership match at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday.

The first half had seen the Cape side enjoying the better of the chances and Team of Choice goalkeeper Marcel Engelhardt was kept busy, making a couple of saves from Thabo Nodada, while Tashrique Morris fired wide from a good position in the box.

United suffered a setback two minutes before the interval when Thamsanqa Mkhize went down in the box under a challenge from Keegan Ritchie and a penalty was awarded.

Khanyisa Mayo made no mistake from the spot as he rifled the ball into the corner of the net to give the visitors the lead.

Maritzburg came out positively after the restart and there was a chance for Daylon Claasen, but the midfielder fired over the bar.

As the game went past the 60 minute mark, Maritzburg upped the ante in search of an equalizer, but found the City defence tough to break down.

After Nodada had another shot saved by Engelhardt, Friday Samu nearly managed to force his way through at the other end, but had his shot blocked.

Things neatly got worse for the Team of Choice with five minutes to play when Steven Pereira tangled with Mogamat May and City were awarded their second penalty.

This time however Mayo smashed his spot kick into the bar, but it proved of little consequence as Maritzburg were unable to fashion any chances of their own in the dying minutes of the match.
