TOUGH BIRDS BATTLE ENDS ALL SQUARE
12 April , 2022
Maritzburg United came from a goal down to claim a 1-1 draw with Swallows FC in a DStv Premiership match at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The match marked a return for fans to the stadium and the supporters were treated to a captivating 90 minutes.
In what was a high tempo start from both teams, the Birds were in front after six minutes when Monnapule Saleng found the back of the net.
There was also a disallowed goal for Musa Nyatama and it could have gotten worse for the Team of Choice on 24 minutes, but a good save by Marcel Engelhardt on a Kagiso Malinga shot, after Saleng had hit the post, ensured United didn't concede again.
Maritzburg came storming out for the second half and they were back on level terms in the 47th minute when Friday Samu converted.
Swallows then had chances to reclaim the lead but failed to make them count as Engelhardt saved from Ruzaigh Gamildien while Saleng blazed a shot over the bar.
Ernst Middendorp's men upped their efforts in search of a winner as the game went into the final 15 minutes, but they were unable to profit from a couple of openings.
