UNITED EDGED OUT BY AMAZULU IN KZN DERBYY
16 April , 2022
Maritzburg United were on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline against AmaZulu in a hard-fought KwaZulu-Natal DStv Premiership derby at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
It was a game of two halves as the hosts enjoyed the better of the first stanza with the Team of Choice going on to dominate the second half, without managing to find the net.
Maritzburg also had chances in the first 45 and nearly took the lead in the seventh minute when Leletu Skelem's shot took a deflection and was heading into the corner of the net until AmaZulu keeper Veli Mothwa made a last-gasp save.
Ten minutes later Team of Choice keeper Marcel Engelhardt did superbly to keep out Lehlohonolo Majoro after the striker had beaten the off-side trap and run through unchallenged.
But not long after - in the 21st minute - the Durban side grabbed the lead as Nicholus Lukhubeni deflected a cross from Majoro into his own net.
After the restart, United piled on the pressure as chances arrived for Friday Samu and Rowen Human, but neither could find the target.
Samu had another good opportunity in the 73rd minute, but from close range he was kept out by the resolute home defence.
Despite showing good intensity and enjoying plenty of the ball in the final 25 minutes, Maritzburg just weren't able to unlock the AmaZulu rearguard.
Next up is TS Galaxy on Saturday, April 23, at the Mbombela Stadium.
STARTING XI: Engelhardt, Claasen, Daniels©️, Baloyi, Pereira, Graham, Lukhubeni, Ritchie, Palace, Samu and Macheke.
SUBS: Petersen (RGK), Human, Skelem, Allie, Soukouna, Njoti, Rae, Kewuti and Ndengane.
