MARITZBURG UP AND RUNNING WITH HARD-FOUGHT CHIPPA WIN
20 August, 2022
Maritzburg United recorded their first win of the new DStv Premiership season thanks to Amadou Soukouna's added time strike in Saturday night's 2-1 win over Chippa United at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
Both of the KZN side’s goals came in added time – one in each half, through Friday Samu and Soukouna.
Maritzburg made a bright start to the evening as Bongani Sam delivered a good cross into the box, which was cleared, before Tumelo Njoti had a shot from range saved and then Tawanda Macheke's effort was blocked.
Despite the initial promise, it was instead the Chilli Boys who drew first blood when Etiosa Ighodaro netted in the 32nd minute.
The Team of Choice held their nerve though and were back on level terms when Samu scored in first half added time.
After the restart, Karim Kimvuidi fired an effort over the bar before Genino Palace had a left footed shot saved by the Chippa keeper.
More opportunities followed for Maritzburg as Siboniso Conco had a shot blocked and then picked out Samu with a cross, but the Zambian headed wide.
After Macheke hit another effort wide, Chippa went close in the 82nd minute with Azola Matrose's curling effort, before Soukouna popped up in the dying minutes of the game to snatch a dramatic winner.
Starting XI: Ndlovu, Makume, Hlongwa, Njoti, Sam, Theron, Moloisane, Kimvuidi, Samu, Macheke and Palace.
