MARITZBURG BEAT ORLANDO PIRATES AT PACKED HARRY GWALA
4 September, 2022
Maritzburg United ran out 1-0 DStv Premiership winners over Orlando Pirates at a rocking Harry Gwala Stadium on Sunday evening.
The only goal of an absorbing match was scored by Amadou Soukouna from the penalty spot on 80 minutes.
Soukouna had also enjoyed Maritzburg’s best chance of the first half when he cleverly cut inside and nearly scored at the near pot, forcing a very good save from Bucs keeper Richard Ofori.
It was the second time Ofori denied Maritzburg’s French striker, who had also gone through on goal shortly before that.
At the other end, with Team of Choice custodian King Ndlovu on top of his game and alert to coming out his box to clear danger when needed, United were able to limit Pirates’ chances in the opening stanza.
There had however been a good early chance for the visiting side when Fortune Makaringe fired narrowly over in the fourth minute after a scramble in the box.
In a tight second stanza, Maritzburg were awarded a spot kick after Siboniso Conco was deemed to have been fouled. Soukouna showed nerves of steel to bury the spot kick and to earn the Team of Choice a first win over the Buccaneers since December 2016.
