ANOTHER KZN DERBY DRAW IN THE DSTV PREMIERSHIP
19 October 2022
Following last weekend's 0-0 draw with Richards Bay, Maritzburg United played to a 1-1 stalemate with AmaZulu at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Wednesday night.
The home side had the better of the first half and after Maritzburg keeper Anye Derick Fru had denied Chidi Kwem and George Maluleka had struck the post, AmaZulu took the lead in the 39th minute when Gabadinho Mhango converted from a cutback from Sphesihle Maduna.
The Team of Choice's best chance had come on 36 minutes when Friday Samu beat Veli Mothwa to the ball and went around the keeper, only for the AmaZulu cover defence to snuff out the danger.
Following the restart, Maritzburg upped the ante as they searched out an equalizer and they soon found themselves playing against 10 men after Tercious Malepe was red-carded for a foul on Brandon Theron in the 55th minute.
Opportunities followed as Keagan Ritchie and Tshidiso Monamodi had shots blocked before Samu drew a near-post save out of Mothwa in the 75th minute.
From the resultant corner, whipped in by Reagan van der Ross, Samu popped up at the far post with an excellent diving header to equalise.
Samu nearly grabbed an 89th minute winner but saw his header cleared off the line before Tawanda Macheke came within inches of scoring from another van der Ross corner.
At the other end, Ramahlwe Mphahlele struck the woodwork with a header in what was the final play of the game.
