MARITZBURG SUFFER SUNDOWNS DISAPPOINTMENT
25 October 2022
Maritzburg United were on the wrong end of a 5-0 scoreline against Mamelodi Sundowns in Tuesday night’s DStv Premiership encounter at a packed Harry Gwala Stadium.
After a late kick-off due to the wet conditions, early play saw the visitors enjoying more of the ball although some solid Maritzburg defending meant Sundowns' chances were limited.
But then after Friday Samu had flashed a header wide for the Team of Choice, the Brazilians took the lead in the 26th minute when Haashim Domingo slotted in from Thapelo Morena's square ball.
The Pretoria side kept up the pressure and added to their tally through Morena and Cassius Mailula, who netted just before half-time in Pietermaritzburg.
Maritzburg showed more intention in attack after the restart and had some chances as Tumelo Njoti hit the sidenetting with a volley before Siboniso Conco had a shot saved by Ronwen Williams.
But their hard work was undone when Sundowns added a fourth goal when Domingo converted another low cross from Thapelo Morena in the 67th minute. Mailula completed the scoring seven minutes later.
Next up for United is Friday night’s KZN derby with Golden Arrows at home.
