TEAM OF CHOICE EDGED OUT BY CHIPPA UNITED
29 January 2023
Maritzburg United were on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline against Chippa United in Sunday's DStv Premiership fixture at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
The only goal of a tight match came 13 minutes into the second half after a goalless opening stanza.
Maritzburg keeper Renaldo Leaner picked up where he left off in last week's win over Golden Arrows when he made a superb double save in the 10th minute to keep the home side from scoring.
The Team of Choice then had openings of their own as Rowen Human and then Amadou Soukouna both had shots but were unable to beat the Chilli Boys keeper in the first half.
Moving into the second half and the KwaZulu-Natal side had a good opportunity to go ahead through Karim Kimvuidi, but he was unable to beat Lloyd Kazapua in a one-on-one.
Instead it was Chippa who took the lead in the 58th minute through Etiosa Ighodaro.
The introduction of Jose Meza off the Maritzburg bench brought renewed vigour to the visitors' attack and he came close with a near-post shot.
At the other end, Siphelele Luthuli headed over under pressure from Bradley Cross and then although the Team of Choice pushed hard for an equaliser in the closing minutes, they could not unlock the stubborn home defence.
