FIGHTBACK TOO LATE AS MARITZBURG DEFEATED BY PIRATES
17 February 2023
Maritzburg United were on the receiving end of a 2-1 defeat to Orlando Pirates in a DStv Premiership fixture at the Orlando Stadium on Friday evening.
In a tight first half which yielded few chances, United had the first opening of the game in the seventh minute and were nearly in front as Amadou Soukouna's snap shot whistled past the upright.
Having done well to limit Pirates' chances, the Team of Choice went 1-0 down in first half added time when Monnapule Saleng whipped in a curling shot from the edge of the box.
Maritzburg responded well after the restart and were close to levelling through Rowen Human's header, following a great cross from Wayde Jooste.
Bradley Cross also had a headed effort before the Soweto side hit the bar through Ndabayithethwa Ndlonldo and then scored their second goal when Terrence Dzvukamanja thundered in a header in the 71st minute.
Still, Fadlu Davids' men showed fight and were close to scoring when Kwame Peprah's header was cleared off the line and then went one better when Tumelo Njoti struck with a brilliant half-volley which arrowed into the corner of the net from outside of the area in the 81st minute.
The Team of Choice pushed hard for an equaliser but couldn't find a way to unlock the hosts' defence in the dying moments of the game.
