MARITZBURG LEAVE TSHWANE EMPTY HANDED
24 February 2023
Maritzburg United were beaten 2-0 by SuperSport United in a DStv Premiership encounter at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Friday night.
The Team of Choice were sunk by second half goals from Kegan Johannes and Bradley Grobler.
It has been the team from KwaZulu-Natal who had the first chance of the opening half when Karim Kimvuidi just failed to bundle the ball over the line after Wayde Jooste’s free kick had been spilled by the SuperSport goalkeeper.
Maritzburg though had a fair amount of defending to do as the home team went on to create a couple of chances of their own.
Having started the second half brightly, the Team of Choice suffered a big setback on 70 minutes when Johannes headed in after a deflected cross.
The hosts doubled their advantage when Grobler volleyed home on the rebound after Maritzburg keeper Renaldo Leaner had done well to save the initial penalty kick.
Two-nil down in the 77th minute, Maritzburg rallied hard to get back into the game and created a couple of good chances, but the likes of Jose Meza and Amadou Soukouna were unable to hit the back of the net.
