TEAM OF CHOICE SUFFER CAPE TOWN CITY SETBACK
4 March 2023
It was a forgettable night for Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala after losing 2-1 to Cape Town City in the DStv Premiership on Saturday.
Maritzburg started with a good tempo although City also had a couple of chances, including a 22nd minute header from Taahir Goedeman which hit the bar.
For the Team of Choice, Jose Meza and Amadou Soukouna were lively up front and the latter nearly put United ahead in the 33rd minute when he burst through on goal, only to be denied by goalkeeper Darren Keet.
Moments after the restart Maritzburg defender Alfred Ndegane made a fantastic goal-saving tackle to stop Darwin Gonzalez from scoring, before Renaldo Leaner made an equally brilliant save to deny Bertrand Mani.
Then, in a lovely team move, the Team of Choice took the lead in the 53rd minute when Karim Kimvuidi's low cross was dummied by Soukouna, allowing Bradley Cross to clinically side-foot the ball into the back of the net.
Seconds later it took another superb reflex save from Leaner to keep out Khanyisa Mayo.
The Cape side were however back on even terms in the 63rd minute when substitute Mduduzi Mdantsane slid a low cross home at the far post.
It got worse for Maritzburg a few minutes later when Mayo's shot spilled over the line despite Leaner's valiant attempt at a save, the goalkeeper soon replaced by King Ndlovu after an injury.
The KZN Capital city side fought hard for an equaliser but squandered their best chance when Kimvuidi fired wide from inside the box.
