MARITZBURG EDGED OUT IN FIVE-GOAL THRILLER
18 March 2023
Maritzburg United's DStv Premiership game against Kaizer Chiefs at a packed Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday night ended in a 3-2 defeat.
The home side started positvely but then suffered a setback when a slip in defence resulted in Keagan Dolly sliding home Ashley du Preez's cross into an empty net after just four minutes. It got even worse six minutes later when Chiefs doubled their lead through Christian Saile, who rifled
in a low drive from just outside the big box.
The Team of Choice were however playing some enterprising football despite the setbacks and did manage to create several openings in the visitor's defence. And so it wasn't aganst the run of play when Maritzburg United pulled a goal back in the 20th minute
as Rafiq de Gode powered in a near-post header from a pin-point Keagan Ritchie corner.
With Karim Kimvuidi influential, the KwaZulu-Natal Capital City side continued to dish up some excellent football and more chances came and went before the equaliser arrived in the 40th minute - a brilliant free kick curler into the top corner from Amadou Soukouna.
Four minutes later de Goede came close to scoring another header when he flashed an effort wide at the back post. The second half was more cagey, the game on a knife-edge and chances at a premium.
The defining moment came on the hour mark when Chiefs were awarded a penalty and Yusuf Maart beat Renaldo Leaner from the penalty spot. The Team of Choice fought hard in the last half-an-hour of the match but were not able to create any clearcut chances to score.
