DISAPPOINTMENT IN DOBSONVILLE
27 April 2023
Maritzburg United ended up on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline in a tense DStv Premiership encounter against Swallows FC at the Dobsonville Stadium on Thursday evening.
Swallows had the better of the opening exchanges as Kwanda Mngonyama forced King Ndlovu into making a save to keep out a header, before Kagiso Malinga fired over the bar.
The Team of Choice grew into the game and created some openings, though the scoreline remained unchanged as Genino Palace sent a header wide and then Amadou Soukouna's side-footer from a Jose Meza cross was deflected away from the target.
Maritzburg remained on the front foot as the first half neared completion and it took a sharp reflex save from Swallows keeper Daniel Akpeyi to prevent Amadou Soukouna's free kick from hitting the back of the net in added time.
United were again close a few minutes after the interval when Soukouna's cross narowlly failed to pick out Wayde Jooste at the back post.
At the other end, Ndlovu did well to deny Tshediso Patjie in the 71st minute but was unable to prevent David Uroni from curling a 20-yard shot into the goal.
The Team of Choice rallied hard in the closing stages of the contest and nearly snacthed a late equalsier through Keegan Ritchie's long-range chip - but Akpeyi was up to the task with a good save.
