MARITZBURG UNITED FALL AT THE FINAL HURDLE
14 June 2023
A 0-0 draw with Cape Town Spurs at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday night was not enough for Maritzburg United to retain their DStv Premiership status.
In front of a packed stadium, chances were few and far between in the opening stanza.
For the Cape side, Therlo Moosa fired over the bar in the ninth minute and went close with a 39th minute header.
The hosts meanwhile were not able to create any clearcut chances and only had a couple of efforts on goal as Kwame Peprah missed with a header and Karim Kimvuidi sent a long-range volley over the bar just before the interval.
United upped the ante in the second stanza and were on top for the most part, creating some good chances, but just failing to find the final touch up front.
That included some early openings for Bradley Cross, who headed over, and Amadou Soukouna, who fired a free kick over the bar.
Jose Meza made a strong impact off the bench and he wasn't far off with a 30-yard shot.
The Team of Choice threw everything at Spurs in the closing moments but just couldn't make it count as Friday Samu missed two headers, as did each of Keagan Ritchie and Soukouna.
